The National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore is transforming into a high-octane laboratory this summer. In a direct bid to arrest an alarming slide in international form, a massive coaching overhaul is underway. Simultaneous, long-term training camps have been launched, designed to radically rebuild both the red-ball and white-ball setups.

The ultimate goal? Restoring Pakistan’s elite status across formats ahead of a grueling international cycle.

Sarfaraz Takes the Red-Ball Reins

The red-ball camp, supervised by head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed, kicks off with a core group of 22 players, including premier batter Babar Azam. This camp will run rigorously until July 10, transitioning directly into a specialized pre-tour training block. The Test specialists will then depart for a crucial two-Test assignment against the West Indies on July 15.

Hesson’s Extended White-Ball Blueprint

On the flip side, white-ball head coach Mike Hesson will welcome a 27-player contingent starting June 15. This marathon limited-overs camp is scheduled to run all the way until September 18. Hesson has been given an extended runway to fine-tune tactical skills and fitness. His primary focus will be preparing the roster for the upcoming T20 Asian Games in Japan, followed by a highly anticipated home ODI tri-series against England and Sri Lanka later in the autumn.

Why This Summer Reset is Vital

This radical training program comes at a time of severe scrutiny for the national team. Pakistan has endured a highly turbulent run on the world stage over the last few cycles:

  • Test Match Slump: Pakistan has not secured an away Test victory since 2023, a stat compounded by a painful 2-0 series defeat against Bangladesh. They currently languish at a disappointing eighth spot on the World Test Championship standings.

  • White-Ball Woes: While they recently secured a hard-fought 2-1 ODI series win against Australia on home turners, the team has repeatedly failed to progress past the knockout stages in recent major global tournaments.

Strategic Roster Fluidity

Both Sarfaraz and Hesson will seamlessly swap players between the two camps depending on workload management. For instance, ODI captain Shaheen Shah Afridi will initially join the white-ball group but is scheduled to put in heavy bowling spells with the red-ball squad to regain his long-format endurance.

Apart from standard net sessions, the camps will heavily emphasize match-replica simulation scenarios and strict fitness benchmarks. One notable absentee from the opening phase is youngster Maaz Sadaqat, who is recovering from appendicitis surgery but will join the white-ball camp as soon as he is medically cleared.

With blockbusters against the West Indies, England, and Sri Lanka looming over the next six months, these intensive Lahore camps represent a vital foundational reset for the future of Pakistan cricket.
